Tomlinson Honored as Top Offensive Player
Chargers Running Back Named MVP on Thursday
By BARRY WILNER
AP
NEW YORK (Jan. 5) - With a bushel full of records and an MVP award already in his 2006 collection, LaDainian Tomlinson added The Associated Press NFL Offensive Player of the Year to his resume Friday.

Tomlinson, voted Most Valuable Player on Thursday, broke Shaun Alexander 's league record for touchdowns by scoring 31 (28 rushing) and also threw for two scores. The brilliant running back not only surpassed the mark Seattle 's Alexander established last year in also winning the MVP-offensive player double, but Tomlinson surpassed Paul Hornung's 46-year-old record for points by getting 186.

"Then, when something like this happens, it makes it all worth it. You feel like everything I do in the offseason, everything I put my body through in training camp and up to this point, it's worth it. It pays off."

It paid off with 38 votes from a nationwide panel of 50 sports writers and broadcasters who cover the league. Next was Tomlinson's former quarterback with the Chargers , the Saints ' Drew Brees with eight, followed by Indianapolis QB Peyton Manning with three and St. Louis RB Steven Jackson with one.

Absolute right call. The guy is disgusting, absolute money inside the 10, and dangerous even from his own 1 yard line. Have not seen him stopped for a loss all year. Plus SD is the best team in the best Division in the better Conference, thanks largely to LT. Gates is the only other offensive weapon on the team.

Plus look at the other guys, Steven Jackson is great, clearly the #2 or #3 back, a toss up with LJ and a healthy Alexander. But no comparison to LT when you must have a 1st down or a 2 min. drill. Brees had a great year, but had Reggie Bush, Joe Horn, McCallister and Colston. Manning did well sans The Edge, but with Wayne and Harrison he still had a mad arsenal, and Rhodes and Addai are a good tandem. LT in a landslide.

Without a doubt! LT absolutely deserves MVP this year. He broke the single-season touchdown record and led the Chargers to become the best team in the league...Brees had a big year, took the surprising Saints to the playoffs and definetely deserves 2nd place...but it's not even close

Hands down the right player. He had a record-breaking season that the NFL has not seen in its history, and carried a team to the best record in the NFL and postseason contention.

Brees did pretty well all things considered, but the "feel good" story is pretty much all he's got.

I don't think the right choice. Through most of the season he was the most exciting player but that isn't what the award is for. Drew Brees completely turned around a crappy saints team with no name receivers(except joe horn). He single handedly won them at least 6 games this season and without him it would have been another 3-13 season.

only thing i'll say is he deserved it--but the league needs to show more respect for westbrooke.--he is a beast on the run-gets the ball thrown to him all the time.--and also returns punts.--a true all around player.--and in fact reggie bush is like that now.--but westbrooke has been doing this for 5 years and bush only 1.--so the league needs to wake up and look at rb's that also catch and do return duty.--total yards .--i didnt go do the stas on it--but i bet westbrooke is close to la danian and possible has more total yards from scrimmage- can somebody look into this.-- had him on my fantasy team and was dependable --had la danian too-and so i won--

You know he is by far. He did break S. Alexanders record and perhaps is the biggest impact player in the nfl. i honestly dont think that the chargers would be where they are if not for L.T.

Yes he is the right pick if you take him off of the team Phillip Rivers Looks like crap and doesn't make the Pro Bowl not to mention all the games they may have lost.

come on everyone alexander one mvp last year and then L.T. did i'd say a lot better then that this year i think he was obvious choice here brees dominated to but L.T. stats were best ever for a RB and lead his team to a better record brees will get QB of the year though but i'd say for sure that L.T. is MVP!
