I work for the railroad and despite claims...the railroad is growing. On average, he can expect about $45-50k the first year. As time goes on....pay goes up because his senority increases and he's no longer "the new guy at the bottom." I'm speaking from working for BNSF. We have retirement, matched 401k, and medical that you pay $15 co-pay for, $30 for emergency room visits if deemed not an emergency, and $6 medication for around $120/month for the whole family. You can make around $120k/year, just depends on how much you want to be home. If you work at the yard "depot" and don't take trains from point A to point B, it's a $50k/year job. Regular hours and days off. Other than that, you don't know when you're going to work or what days you have off, but you can make over $100k. Depends on the lifestyle you want. Don't let anyone fool you, my wife works for The social security administration "gov. job" and I make way more, and have way better benefits then she does. I've worked 2 times in 2 weeks for a total of about 16 hours and made $2800. You do the math. But it's not always like that, he'll be the "low man" until younger senority guys are hired below him and he'll get the "lower paying jobs" i.e "working in the yard for $50k/year" This is for BNSF and Union Pacific...other railroads aren't as "big" so the pay may be less. If he does get hired and he wants the "big bucks" by going out on a train, get a dog, because you'll be sleeping alone every other night. Hope this helps.
