Why where the redskins, sold to Dan Snyder? The Cooke's had the team for so long.

The team was sold by the trustees of Jack Kent Cooke's estate after he died. As I recall, one of his sons tried to put together a group to buy the team, but he was outbid by Snyder. You can read more about it here:

I agree with you that Snyder has been bad news for the team.

The Redskins are the most valuable franchise in proffesional sports...This limits who would have the money to buy them.

Snyder was on the short list of people who could pony up the money for the most valuable franchise in proffessional sports.

If I could afford the Skins, I'd buy them...That is true of about 99.99999% of the world's population.

Plain and simple.
