After the last war the UK population was so low that it could not meet its own economic demand.
Long ago the establishment had already decided that a controlled diversity of population actually increases economic prosperity,,,
There was a large influx of people from the Carribean that alone of all the immigrants actually made a serious effort to integrate and were treated very badly by us.
Quite often though and especially more recently immigrants are well educated opponents of a particularly nasty regime, they quite often also have resources that create more wealth, just as in the modern day where a considerable number of British companies are now 'foreign' owned.
Yes some are poor but they in the main come from 'hell' and just want to work hard for peanuts doing jobs that are poorly paid and that us Brits don't want..
Same as the USA and the Mexico issue.

Never heard this applied to the UK. I do remember in the 60s, a great time for useless statics, that the population of Belgium was very dense, but I didn't take it seriously.

The UK (in particular London, the metropolitan counties and South East England) is so densely populated because the UK was the first country to industrialise (i.e movement from rural to urban living) and because it is small.

Population densities were just as high (in some cases - such as inner London - higher) in 1945. Most of the signicant growth came 100 years before that. Suggestions that the UK population density is somehow linked to immigration is nothing more than thinly veiled racism.

The ignorance being shown in some of these answers is appalling.

The UK has a dense population because it's not a very big place! However due to it being a rich country, the health care is good therefore the birth rate is reasonable and people are living longer.

Because we are a small island and since 1945 we have had immigrants coming to our shores to work and supplement our working population. This was required as the indigenous workers didn't want to do the more menial tasks. In the 1960,s there was a shortage of bus and underground train drivers and they were recruited in the Caribbean. We now have Poles and other eastern Europeans coming here to work. Current population is around 62 million and rising fast.

I dont know. Way to overpopulated in my eyes.
Maybe we are devising a plan to empty there countrys so we can go and get them back and have another empire. Probably not and i hope not just hope that the BNP would have a few years in power so the popultion can thin out a bit.

You 2 below me have been smoking to much wacky backy me thinks because you dont think our country is over populated? New york states fairly full and we are not much bigger than than
that so how the hell can we have anymore room. Theres not enough housing, national brits have to go homeless because some family from new EU country moves here or a refugee comes here for a free ride ( not always but quite often ) and around the world we are known as a soft touch with a " hey come in all we will make room by getting rid of the real Brits " attitude

You people are a disgrace not the ones who have the guts to say what real and what we see around us. Highly controlled immegration is absolutly fine but we are doing it stupidly. I also have never seen an asian from the middle east working in a medial job ( factories etc ) just in take aways, taxi driving etc. Most of them have high paid jobs or just sponge of the government. Why not train more brits to be Doctors, Nurses, Accountants instead of getting foreigners in that you can barely understand. I have had to ask my Doctor severaltime what he has said tothe point i get him to write it out before changing my doctor. What good is a Doctor or nurse if you cant understand them?

Coz tony "pubic hairs" blairs is so scared of being called a racist he lets all the immigrants in - "no problem mr kadir - yes come in - we will hook you up and treat you better than our own!!! while my country can go f**k itself - then i can get a pat on the back from other politicians and my REAL fellow countrymen and women can wait months for nhs treatment and pay through the odds for daily nessessities due to tax increases - and dont worry sir, if anyone insults you i will have them arrested for racial abuse"
I must say at this point - i have nothing against immigrants as if i were in the same position as them - yeah i'd do the same - this is actually a dig at crazy politicians who charge you £5 for a box of fags and say "u.k is skint" then go out (in a rolls royce) to a meal (at the savoy hotel) and spend £750 per head for a meal of 30 odd people (all paid for by the tax payer) just so they can "have a chat" see my point???????????/

Ah good, another excuse for the racist ignorami to spout their views.

This country is relatively densely populated because it has an equable climate, fertile lands, and has been a hub of world industrial and technological power and affluence for the past few centuries.

That said, we could probably easily support another few million people with improvements in infrastructure and efficiency of water transport etc.

This lefty government lets anyone into the country, even though they have no right to be here.By the time the Govt realise they have no right they have disappeared .No wonder they are given money, shelter, food for free, who can blame them for crossing several safe countries to come here. It's time we said 'Enough is enough' we can't accept any more,we are only a small country..try Australia...much more room, more sense too...they would just refuse them entry...Why can't we?
