Sometimes people will tense their shoulders and kind of sink their head down in a prolonged shrug. Sometimes when people shrug like this, eye contact is not made and they bow their head down in the process.

I've realize that the shrug usually happens if the person is getting complimented or receiving attention (positive or negative).

Can anyone explain what this behavior means though? It's not an "I don't know" shrug, because it lasts longer. Does anybody know why people do this then?

Also, is it a particular behavior people frown upon or embrace?

I think that mostly it is an embarrassed shrug. They don't know what to say. I do it all the time when someone compliments me. I don't know what to say, and I am hoping to god that the subject is changed. I think it's linked to low self esteem! I think it's neither frowned apon or embraced. I could be wrong. People just usually take it like it is. And don't think much about it.

It's just Human body language. It says "I don't Know" "I'm sorry"
you are right it is probably a submissive body act from a million years ago.

if they are receiving attention, perhaps its their humble way of accepting it,,,,,and dont place too much emphasis on eye contact, while in some cultures and to some people, it means honesty,,, in other cultures and to other people, its considered rude ,,,,,,
