ISLAM is a VERB that means: SURRENDER your will to god “Allah”; OBEY his commandments; be in total SUBMISSION to what he wants you to do all the time; and do all the above PUERLY / SINCERILY for his sake alone; in order to achieve PEACE between your soul and him the one and only creator.
This is as quoted by a muslim on the aquacool site. they speak of allah as god not God. therefore not love. The one and only creator in God not allah and allah is not God he or it is a god. If it went about God they would have thought differently.

While I do not believe it can be found in the quoran, it has been preached for centuries that "its us agains them", and they must either be 1.converted, 2.subjected, or, if these fail, then 3. they must be killed.
I personally think this came about during, or after, the crusades, when millions of them were killed for the same reason, "its us against them." They were the infidels then. And just like now, it was either be 1.converted, 2.subjected, or, if these failed, then 3. they had to be killed.
So, they learned this crap from us. Now they are practising it and we don't like it.
Here's the bottom line, if we do not plan to convert, if we do not plan to be subjected, then we must plan to defend ourselves. Hope this helps in understanding them.
