Not liking a certain subject such as romance in a film based solely on gender is either a myth or a very broad generalization. There is no biological reason for men disliking romance, it's something both genders engage in, and a very primal form of human bonding.
But there may be some truth in it. Boys are socialized to act differently than girls, to appear physically strong and ready as well as emotionally stoic, a behavior that is reinforced from infancy onward. Outward displays of affection could undermine the appearance of "projecting machismo", and since film viewing is a semi-public affair, becoming visibly engaged in romantic imagery could be potentially embarrassing for a man with an image to keep. On the flip side, women, being encouraged to display their emotional state, might enjoy the state of open emotion that some movies create, a display of emotional immediacy that is a "desireable quality" to a potential mate in a potential relationship.
I believe many romantic films are actually written for women, and appeal to their less-well-suppressed emotional responses. As a contrast question; have you ever seen a guy that, shown representations of action or violence in film, is entirely disengaged or uninterested? Decisive action is a requirement of "maleness" and men are taught that they must summon a response to incidents of violent behavior. War films are the epitome of spatial problem solving requiring action as a response to violence, and appeal to men who, from a young age, have seen their role models ( other men ) engaged in similar response-positive acts.

Do you want the TRUTH?

I can only Speak for myself. Most Romantic movies have an Agenda! IT IS TO MAKE MONEY, by portraying a Non-Real LIFE Scenario, to get YOU to buy the Video!

Sleepless in Seattle, as an example. Yes, I did watch the entire video.

Perhaps I may ask you a Question? Do you think that LIFE IS REALLY LIKE THAT? Or was that Just Entertainment [Wishing It Could BE Like That]?

Thanks, RR

I'm a guy and I like romantic movies. 95% of the time from the guys I know, they're NOT pretending.
It really depends on their personalities. If they're a reader, a gamer, a sport lover, an artist, or etc. I personally like romantic flicks provided that they're comedy films, otherwise I'd get bored out of my skull.
And mentally, the male brain works differently. Chemically and psychologically.
Generally, guys like continuous movement, girls like spark up witty humor.
Overall. Yes, they are pretending : )

Hi, this is Pattie's brother, I'm just on bcause I'm testing Highspeed internet, but enough about me, the reason that guys dont lie romantic movies is bcause we dont think that the whole kissy-lovey-dovey stuff is macho and also, most guys who were raised by their father (or not, school and clubs) get taught that guys dont like that sort of things, so our mind gets made up that if we enjoy a "chick flick" then they arnt cool, or they lose their "maness." Well i hope this answered ur question and didnt give u more, :D

Why don't many women enjoy football, professional wrestling, or burping and farting???

I guess we are just wired differently.

Actually, some of use do like romantic movies...one of my favorite romatic comedies is My Best Friend's Wedding. I must admit that the reason I like it though is that it does not have a vapid ending where the "right girl" gets the guy.

The choices of men and women about what types of movies are best is largely a matter of preference, but researchers have also discovered that romantic movies cause an increase in progesterone (in both men and women), whereas action movies produce an increase in testosterone in men. So...it may also be a hormonal thing!!!

Some excerpts from the listed article:

"When you're watching movies, your hormones are responding, not just your mind," said Oliver Schultheiss, a U-M psychology professor whose work will be detailed in an upcoming issue of the journal Hormones and Behavior. "This also helps explain why certain people like to go to certain types of movies. Affiliation-motivated people (such as women) like to see romantic flicks. But power-motivated people (such as men) prefer movies with more action and violence.

"If you want to learn about someone's personality, look at their video collection or look at what's on their bookshelves."

So what's the best date movie for a couple? "They should definitely see the romantic movie and if the guy is high-testosterone, he should just clench his teeth and in exchange, it will help promote the relationship," Schultheiss said.

Higher testosterone levels can help muscle growth, enhance libido and prime people for more assertive, dominant behavior including aggression, he said. Researchers are less clear about the effects of progesterone. Progesterone is known to reduce anxiety. It is also possible that higher levels of progesterone make people more attentive and can prime them for opening up more and being more romantic while decreasing libido.

While both hormones are present in both sexes, women have less testosterone than men.

whatever, to all the guys that answered, ur full of crap! to all the girls that answered, u've got us all wrong, quit stereotyping. most guys just dont think we'll like the movie. yes there are a few that act all macho and dont watch em cuse "they're a guy" but for the most part its just stubborness. we dont give em a chance cause we dont think we'll like em. but as for me, i've watched plenty of "chick flicks" some of them did suck, but some of them are pretty good. an yes i have cried watching a few an yes i was in front of a girl when i cried. no big deal. i think you're more of a man if u are able to open up and show that "forebidden side of un-masculinity" to the plp you are close to.

They are just bored of romantic movies and they are just pretending to like romantic so they won't get dumped by their girlfreinds.
