At a concert, I foolishly had a famous musician sign my guitar. Now I want it off. She used permanent marker. Is there a way to get it off without ruining the finish of the guitar?

WD 40 will do it. Spray it on and let it soak for about 2 minutes, then wipe off.

I'll assume that the finish of the guitar is probably super hi gloss. Get some 0000 (4 zero or super fine) steel wool and some regular furniture polish, doesn't matter which one. Spray the polish onto the marker and then rub the area with the steel wool. If you can see wood grain (in other words the finish is a clear coat and you can see the wood underneath instead of an opaque lacquer) then rub with the grain, not against it. If the steel wool makes a shiny spot then just take a piece of dry steel wool and rub the spot to knock down the sheen and blend it in. I've done this countless times on a customers' dining table when their kids get their hands on markers or ink pens.

Some things people consider "permanent" really aren't. Markers can be removed sometimes just by wiping WD-40 on it with a soft rag. Sometimes vegetable oil can remove things (such as wood stains). The product "chlorox eraser" (I think is the name) should work too. When all else fails you may be able to use a soft buffer and buffing compound to do the minimum amount of damage to the finish.

I used furniture polish to get permanent marker off of my dining room table, which I would assume would be close to the finish on a guitar. Soft cloth and lot of rubbing and it came up good as new- I hope it works for you too.

Call a good music store that does repair work on guitars, and
tell them your problem. They might be able to give you an answer over the phone, or else tell you how much it would cost you. If it's a high dollar guitar my advice is don't mess with it,
take to a reputable repair person.
