Most tube lights uses less energy per candle power or luminosity. They are Florescent lamp. Most Bulbs are incandescent lamps.
They do have tube light type technology(florescent) in the form of traditionally looking bulb also (just came out about a year ago on consumer market).
So it is the type of light you need, soft white, cool white, more reddish, more yellowish. Slight greenish tint. Colour light.
So you need to use your judgement some cannot tolerate, certain type of light, every thing else being equal you need to use only most efficient source to conserve energy and save money.
As far as life goes I had incandescent bulb and florescent tube both that lasted 20 years they were firmly mounted and sparingly used and I had some(both type) that needed replacing more often say 5 years or so. Table lamps were replaced about every 2 to 3 years. I replaced the ones that lasted 20 years, because they had gone quiete deem, but still operating.
