Hi all! Serious comments from adults over 25 years of age please. I am a stay at home mom, my kids are 10 and 6 1/2 years old and go to school full time. I am working at the kids school as a lunch room supervisor and working at the local community cnetre teaching kindergym classes. I have been accepted to college to study to become an Educational Assistant and start January 12th. i work about 10 hours a week and my husband is Rudely asking me to get a "real job". We are struggling financially, but the EA job would pay $22.13 per hour once done. Am I being selfish by wanting to go to school or should I give up my dream and work at a Tim Horton's donut type job that I hate for the rest of my life?

GO TO SCHOOL!!! To convice your husband, do the math. How much money will you make if you're working full time at a minimum wage job for the X months that it will take you to get your degree/certificate? If you go to school and get your certificate, how long would it take you to "pay back" the money you made at the low-paying job?

Example: Minimum wage: $5 an hour x 40 hours=$200 a week. Let's say that you have to go to school for 32 weeks. That's $6,400 that you'd "lose". If you'll make $22 an hour after you graduate, you'll be making $22 x 40=$880 a week. It would only take you a little over 7 weeks to "pay back" the money you lost. ($6200 / $880= 7.27) Well worth it, I'd say!

No, you are not being selfish. By going to school to acquire job skills, you will, in the long run, improve your family's standard of living. At $22/hr, your education will eventually pay for itself because it's a whole lot more than what you'd make in a donut shop, which is mostl likely minimum wage. If you are struggling financially, you may qualify for fiinancial aid.
Dream big - have you considered becoming a teacher?

Big Picture. where will you be in 5 years? The obvious is...kids grow up and leave.

From your description of your current situation, raising children, working and volunteering it is obvious that your passion is with helping children develop.

The world needs more people like you.

An education is something that can never be taken away. Student loans and grants can help defray the cost of education.

No, you are not selfish, you are inspired. GO FOR IT.
NO, do not ever give up on your dream. If you continue on the path your on, you will never forgive your husband or yourself for denying the world of your talent.

Single adult mom and I'm telling you RUN as fast as your feet will carry you to the registrars office and enroll in classes. Be there Monday morning when the office opens. At the end of the day you are the only one you can fall back on.

I would go to school, sounds to me like your husband might be jealous of what you would be able to earn. Always go for the job you would be happy with, never take a job you hate, it won`t last long.

Seems like you lean favorably towards going to school so I would personally recommend that.
You should do what makes you feel happy as well as something good for the whole family.

we only "go round" once in life; better do what we enjoy. don't end up in a teenie bopper atmosphere or you will be so sorry. go for it and rip the rear view mirror off! don't look back. your kids will thank you for it.

Follow your heart and become an EA. I think you'll regret it if you don't.
