i can't tell if he is asking what does rpg stand for or what is the purpose of an rpg game.

lol nice to know that people were answering what does rpg stand for,i think he meant what is the purpose of an rpg,a rpg is like living out a made up virtual world,where you can do can live out all these different types of fantasy's depending on the rpg game,in my opinion Jeremy from purepwnage had a good point about rpg games in one of his interviews,they don't really require that much skill,cause its all about who invests the most time in the game,and who has the better gear,its nothing like a fps,or a rts game where both sides start off with nothing,and use there race to the best of there advantage,rpgs are overrated in my opinion.

RPG= Role Playing Games.
What it is: Not a company, just a genre. A very popluar genre. You assume the role of a character for either a portion of the game or the entire game.
Example: Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, American McGee's Alice, etc.
