It saddens me that so many animals are put down because their owners cant afford to pay for medical treatment.

RichZ your answer is not relevant. I am discussing animals, not children.

I agree with Amanda, pet insurance is not expensive. Also I think that if you cant afford pet insuance, you should think twice to weather you can afford a pet. I think before getting a pet you should understand the costs involved. Pets are living things and should be treated with the care they deserve. Some people treat them as toys for their kids and when the kid gets bored just abandon them. Makes me so angry.

I think it should be and will be soon. I know there is talk of making it a test to get an animal and if owners will do that then they should get insurance - i am a vet nurse and see it daily when owner can not pay for vet bills and have them put to sleep because of this!

I understand where your coming from. Yes, too many people take on animals without being able to adequately care for them. I do think though that those types of people wouldn't take their animals to the vet even if they could afford to. They just don't care that much. The PDSA is always an option for people who can't afford treatment.

Personally I think pet insurance is a rip off. Insurance compaines are out to make money. Instead, I put some money into an account each month to cover emergencies like vets bills (and I get the interest on it too!)

I think RichZ probably lives in the States where they don't have free healthcare for kids.
A lot of people can afford insurance and bills, they just resent having to spend the money on an animal. Its all smiles and cuddles when they're small and fun, but as soon as anything goes wrong and they have to take some responsibility they get disillusioned. Some people get pets as status symbols - look at how many people are lugging around a chihuahua at the moment! They don't think about the realities of keeping an animal. People dump puppies soon after they get them because they're not housetrained! They have pets put down because they're getting older, moving abroad and all kinds of miserable reasons.
You can't force people to be responsible owners any more than you can force car drivers to take a test and have insurance or drive without drinking. This is a neat idea but would just lead to more pets being dumped.
I'm in favour of children being taught about animal care and first aid all the way through school. I bet most kids would enjoy a lesson like that.

I would rather see legislation to force vets not to overcharge so much! There is no reason to charge hundreds and thousands of pounds for simple procedures.
Until that utopian moment, pet insurance is an excellent idea, though we can't all afford it. Before acquiring a large animal such as a horse or dog, weigh up the possible expenses.

I am sadder that so many children are not getting good medical care because their parents can't afford to pay for medical treatment. I would rather see a kid covered by family health insurance than a dog or cat covered if it came down to a choice as to what is compulsory.

Yes, it is very sad indeed, but come on now, some people can't get insurance, and that is even sadder. Who cares? No body. No one cares if you live or die, unless of course you happen to have insurance. It's all about money. If someone tells you different, they are speaking with forked tongue.

i agree with you

just before xmas i thought i heard one of my cats cry due to being shut in some where
thankfully she was sitting at the top of our stairs looking at us as tho we were mad lol

i just adopted a cat from a refuse 3 weeks before as my dear cat's best pal died of old age
the cat we gave our home to was neglected and is very frightend at sudden movement
it turns out the last people who had him failed his health and just shuned him because of his health problems

after we had him for thee weeks on this particular night another cat was meowing at our
front door
this is when we thourght our little queen cat was shut in somewhere
this poor cat at the door was under weight full of ticks and fleas
who ever dumped him are really sick
it cost next to nothing to keep a pet healthy and nothing for pet food
i'll gladly pay through the nose to keep all my cats healthy
