A German doll call Bild Lilli (not sure of spelling), who was in turn based on a comic strip character, as I understand it.

By the way, do you understand why she is so skinny? It is NOT to encourage anorexia, but because dolls are NOT like humans: a doll's proportions cannot be the same as a humans on such a small scale, because the fabrics don't get scaled down to the same extent, and you end up with much bunching at the waist in order to wear a gathered skirt. In order to look right when she is dressed, a fashion doll needs a small than proportionate waistline. If the rest of the proportions were more like real people, that pinched in waist that is necessitated by the gathers would look even more unnatural. And of course she must be tall in proportion, in order to show off those fancy skirts to good effect. This is especially true when you consider that the early Barbies did not have floor length Bob Mackie creations, but wore shorter skirts to look like a modern young miss in the 1950s and early 1960s. The "never removed from box" collector's Barbies are a very recent development.

It was Bild Lilli, the German doll based on an adult comic strip in the Bild Newspaper. The dolls were sold there as novelty items. Ruth Handler saw them when she was there and since she was a co-owner of Mattel she bought the rights and then copied the doll and named it Barbie after her daughter.

It was the maker's daughter's name. Ken is actually Barbie's Brother, not b/f.
