I am also going at the time of the venice carnival and just wanted to know the highlights of Venice and why.

Well,during the carnival you will find a big mess and a lot of people but it's quite interesting if you see it for the first time.Otherwise every corner of Venice is beautiful and everyone likes different spots.If you can go on the top of Saint Mark church tower.From there you get a wonderful view of Venice and the laguna.

The best thing to do is to explore all the sidestreets! Basically, you can "get lost" in all the narrow, winding passages and come across some of the most interesting things and people. Also, some of my favorite spots to go when i went were the Peggy Guggenheim Museum, St. Marks Square (a must), St. Mark's Basilica, and a short boat trip to see the glass factories of Murano (when i went to this, we were the only visitors and it was free!). Have fun!

Make sure you see Venice at night. Preferably, a gondola ride at night. The city is beautiful with all the lights and ambiance.
