The ironclad solution is an old Pentium class compouter, running headless after it is setup with http://ipcop.org and then on that firewall, install http://dansguardian.org that is word filtered web content, plus http://spamassassin.apache.org which killfiles all spam at the firewall!
Lists of all the bad stuff are already on the web at those sites, to begin with.
Up to 36 client nodes are protected, using an 800 Mhz system in our schools. If you have only one to 5 computer nodes, a 400mhz box would do well.
Initial setup takes about 20 minutes. I let mine run 24/7/365, on a UPS with my cable modem.

If you are using a firewall product (you should be) add the sites to the parental control list and activate parental control. Alternatively you can block the sites completly either in your internet properties (security tab in IE) or you could utilise a dedicated parental control package search for a review and make an informed choice.

You can set the limits and parameters of where anyone on your computer goes when online. When you are on your homepage, go to TOOLS, select INTERNET OPTIONS, then set each category. You'll be setting yourself up as the system administrator and you'll have a password so the young-uns won't be able to readjust your settings. This is a built in feature on all computers, and you can take advantage of them easily and they are FREE! When you set these yourself, you are protecting your children and your computer as well from all kinds of predatory attacks.
This doesn't mean you don't want a good anti-virus program running, too.
Good Luck!

if they have their own e-mail address you can go into the settings for that e-mail and adjust the settings so that they can only access certain web sights.
