Nicotine is a stimulant. You get that rush from smoking it that makes you crave another one. Once your brain realizes you haven't had a cigarette in awhile it tells you to smoke another one so it can get that stimulant effect again.

It's not the nicotine that causes lung cancer, it's the smoke. A nicotine patch will not give you lung cancer.

Nicotine does give you an addictive rush - so addictive that it is believed that tobacco is more addictive than heroin! It constricts the blood vessels, which can have lots of negative effects, including heart problems and inability to function sexually. There is no safe level of tobacco use; even an occasional smoke will damage your body, as well as setting you up for addiction, when you won't be able to stop with just one once in a while.

It is much easier never to start than it is to stop!

Well, nicotine (especially the one gotten from cigarettes) is addictive for a fact. As for other harmful effects, that's a question for the doctors. However, if U're wondering how to free yourself from its strangle-hold which the Surgeon-General & Federal Department of Health warns of the likelihood of cancer, try getting a permanent cure.
