They are the only hope of maintaining a descent standard of living for the middle class.

Absolutely bad given that in our current free market demand regulates companies to treat employees well. It used to be that employees could not simply change jobs easily so they needed unions to protect them. Today unions are largely liberal political machines that support Socialist causes. The teachers union is a good example. Socialism hurts the poor as there ends up much less job opportunity and they get relegated to meanial jobs they cannot escape; the govt makes they stay. So unions are contributing to poverty in America.
In our wonderful free market, anyone can learn new skills and advance. I went from failing high school to a very high standard of living today with a wonderful family and kids who go to the third world to care for the poor. This magical life I had came in part because I decided to ask others for help and learn new skills so I could progress to earn more at work, a union had nothing to do with it.

The effect (not necessarily tactics) of labor unions was good in settling the idea of a living wage.
That is history.
Currently labor unions seem to be promoting illegal immigration to get more union dues, which undermines a living wage.
That is bad.

They used to be very good because the employers took advantage of the workers. For the most part, employees today are treated very fairly. If workers are in a environment where they are not treated fairly they need a union. It is sad but true, that unions protect the bad employees and hurt the good employees.

Good. If not for labor unions, we'd be paid just as badly as they are in China, Mexico, etc. Labor unions have created a large powerful middle class in the US, Great Britain, and other similar countries.

Labor unions have their place but they have overstepped and have caused more business to go off shore than to stay here. As a capitalistic country its about the profit. Which is why we are a wealthy nation. In today's economy they are hurting more than they are helping.
