I recently installed the newest version of iTunes and now whenever I connect my iPod it does this annoying "Determining Gapless Playback Information" thing which slows down the whole programme! Does anyone know exactly what this is and if it is necessary? Is there anyway I can stop it doing this? When it does this it won't respond as quickly when I want to say move songs to new playlists etc. It seems to have a mind of its own all of a sudden!

It's analyzing the beginnings and ends of the songs to determine how best to eliminate any gap when one song ends and another begins. It should only do it once, so leave iTunes running long enough to complete the operation.
