I'm half Eastern Cherokee and I agree completely. And to True Grits above, maybe that happens with the people where you live, but not every nation is the same. I'm sick and tired of people thinking all Native people are from the exact same culture. There are 500+ cultures, each totally different.
Also, my particular people weren't "given" ANYTHING. One man, Tsali, died so we could stay where the Qualla Boundary is now. Then, we bought back the surrounding area.

I don't know who you are talking to but I don't hear about slavery reparations everyday. I hear more often about Indian tribes either building a new casino or suing another state for a two hundred year old treaty where there are million dollar homes with the untimate goal to be the right to build a new casino. That's not a critique on the situation but rather a state of affairs.
It would be nice if the US could get past this. Maybe these constant penny-ante payments just make things worse and make reparations to the wrong people. Maybe a general reparation would be a good way to go to only Americans descended from Indians that lived in the USA (no need to pay for Mexico's, Cuba's, and Canada's crimes) and those descended from slaves in the USA prior to the civil war.
Either that or an official statement that nothing will ever be done. I'm all for reparations for those two groups but it would probably be unworkable. How much money should part Indians get like Angelina Jolie get? Once paid, Indian reservations would have to be disolved and casinos would go bye-bye. All public funding for Indian programs, colleges, health care would disappear. A lot of people with a lot of power would be exchanged for a general payment to millions.
But bad treatment was not introduced when the Spanish crossed the Atlantic and killed millions of people through intent or accident. Spain was a violent country and the western hemisphere was violent as well not all that BS about living in harmony with the land. Indians drove plenty of animals extinct and killed each other pretty well. That was the way of the world at the time. Unfortunately they got visited by the Spanish and the Portuguese who were simply better at it and had better military technology on their side.
Treaty breaking isn't new either. Check Irish history for the last thousand years and all the broken treaties. The Irish were the native people of Ireland and were colonized by a foreign country for a thousand years. Treatment was bad as it was in the whole world: Africa, Asia, the Americas, Eastern Europe. Even England and Spain were conquered and invaded by other countries.
As the Irish and other groups learned, you don't get anywhere easily with a chip on your shoulder. Once they stopped whining about some four hundred year old treaties they managed to join the rest of the world and recently it was ranked the richest country in the world per capita. This was a country that was among the poorest in Europe thirty years ago.

There are no victims, only volunteers. Many of the volunteers are unaware of their choices, but they are making choices. Maybe you desire change in your life, but do not ask for specifics and do not trust in Great Mother. Beware what you ask for, you will get it.
As far as compensation goes, the Indians are the most compensated group in the USA. If you are a member of a tribe you will never have to work, although you may choose to (Native Americans are proud people). Most of the tribes have their own casino operations going now where the tribe shares the profits. Education is offered free all the way up to college. On the other hand, some of the ancestors did not want any part of the agreements made with the white man and were disassociated from the tribe and thus are not privy to any of the compensations the tribes get from the Gov. or the gambling. If you or your ancestors are not members of a tribe, then you are entitled to nothing. True poverty is denying your heritage, denying your very existence. Be proud of who you are, take responsibility for who you are and stand solidly in your own potential. You have all it takes to be a success, regardless of what others are saying, and you need not the government to baby you.
This is an opportunity to redefine what Native American really is, to start over again and be the new American. Let's make it a positive change.

Indians are getting their payback through the casinos. They weren't the only ones to be hurt by the white people of this planet though. White people enslaved the blacks and the Chinese. Killed and stole the land from the Indians and then using other nationality as fodder for their war machine fought over which country (France, Spain, great Britain exctera excetera) should rule the united states. I am white, i also have some french in me as well as Cherokee but i am not looking for a hand out i will leave that to the African Americans who live for the discrimination act.

Throughout history, stronger cultures have subjugated weaker cultures - I'm not saying it's right - just that that is the way of the world. I live in New Mexico which probably has the largest population of "Indians" in the United States, and to say that they dont get "Hand outs" is totally false - they get all of the income based assistance that every other person would qualify for PLUS tax-free income from industry "on the rez".
That point stated, why is it that any question of a racial nature gets responses like the one from "Trini-HaitianGrl81"?
If you want people to consider your side of an argument, such as the one over slave reparations, then sound reasonable instead of being insulting, "Little girl".

Most things happen for reasons. It's said the Red peoples
were the dominant race on Atlantis. At some point,
human nature being what it is. They wanted to rule the world, and caused war and death.
Supposedly they had a giant crystal that harnessed the
magnetic power of the Earth. They used it for war and it
backfired and destroyed the major part of the civilization of Atlantis. It's said to be under the bottom soil in the
Bermuda Triangle today. Ezekiel 1:22, KJV only, mentions "the terrible crystal!"
And I believe the Chittim mentioned in scripture were the descendants of Atlantis. The Chittim mentioned in Daniel, that go to Iran in the latter days, is the U.S. today. Where the Red peoples migrated to.
It is said the Red peoples are supposed to be the
spiritual teachers of the Whites right now. But before they
can help spiritually. They themselves must overcome mans material nature to be self-righteous.

OK....you have to be 14 because you are off the walls and don't have a clue as to what your talking about! If your trying to say that Black people are asking for handouts than your wrong little girl. There aren't even any slaves alive....and if there are I haven't heard of them going to the government and asking for money because they were slaves? I mean where did you get this nonsense from? If Native Americans asked for handouts I'm petty sure that the government wouldn't go broke because there aren't that many pure Native Americans left!

Ok. Maybe they didn't ask for handouts. But at least they were given reservations (or placed in one). The Indians were given these mini-countries. Like the girl said above me, you have to be really naive, the Indians weren't killed because they were different, the white people just wanted what was theirs, their land. And I didn't even know Indians were slaves, where did you get that from? Oh, PS. Alot of Indians died because of white peoples brutality, but most of them died of the disease the white people spread, Indians didn't have a strong enough immune system to fight the diseases off.

True, and my Dad was part Cherokee himself. Paying back because of guilt for the things that we are not guilty of is just silly and the notion should be slapped down.
