Can't believe a pro will ask this. Checked all my textbooks. Nothing. I was checking my CD-Drive (my default) and found out it wasn't responding to me. As if it recieves no power already. Checked the power cords from behind and found they're okay. CHecked "My Computer" and it dissapeared from drive directory. Needs serious help fast. Been using my USB External DVD-RAM Drive ever since, because it's my only DVD drive.

Wires and cable ribbon are plugged correctly according to my book.

I haven't touched the computer's "inside" for more than six months...no problems in six months...

Let me start off by saying that this is definitely interesting.
I can think of quite a few things that could be causing this so Ill start with what I would check and move on in order.

1) I know you checked your cables, but did you verify that the cables themselves were good? Often times one can have a bad power lead. Although all connections in a power supply essentially are hard soldered to a single source, the actual Molex could be bad. Id first swap it with a working connector.
also replace the ribbon cable on the drive and look for any bent pins on the drive itself. I have seen pins recess and seem to work for a long time till "chip creep" sets in. If you have any pins which are pressed in, they can be gently pulled back out with a pair of needle-nose pliers.

2) After verifying power, is the drive visible in the bios?
It's important to isolate if the machine is seeing it at all vs. just an OS issue. If the bios itself can't see it, then make sure the IDE or SATA controller is enabled, verify jumper settings on the drive itself or purchase an IDE to SATA converter (available on ebay) to test with a different method.

3) If the bios sees it but the OS does not, then check your Primary and Secondary IDE controller drivers. They should be present and working properly. If not then remove the one that is present from safe mode, reboot and allow the machine to redetect all. Since they are tied together if one has an issue it wont reload until it reloads the primary controller.

4) Is the drive itself bad? There is a controller built into the drive that maintains communications, and if that goes then so does the drive. You can actually scalp a controller out of another drive if your comfortable with component level repair, but in the end usually its cheaper and easier to simply replace the drive.

5) Check for a virus. Yup, there are a couple viruses out there that can cause this, but I wouldn't bank on this being the cause. Usually viruses target volatile media but is certainly not impossible.

If it says that " hal.dll " report is lacking then it has greater issues then your broken CD-ROM stress itself. certainly in case you connect it appropriate and all which you will re-deploy abode windows over the prevailing abode windows. that's stated as a " grimy deploy " it it is going to artwork. except and until the recent CD-Rom stress which you're starting to be to be is an exceedingly unique kind i do no longer think of that there will be any themes or standards of from now on drivers to re-deploy abode windows applying the abode windows CD.
