I don't think you're supposed to know for sure, at least myself and 10 others who watched it couldn't figure it out. You're 'sposed to decide for yourself (i think)

One of my all time faves: Tom Cruise is an uber rich thirty something who has inherited a publishing magazine empire in New York. Hes a bit of a player with the ladies and has everything he wants. Hes having sex with Cameron Diaz , as well as starting romantic intentions with Penelope Cruz. Well Cameran Diaz goes mad one morning after seeing Cruise leave Penelope's apartment, and the two go for a drive and she drives off a bridge, putting Cruise into a coma. He recovers but is in loads of mental and physical pain. Rather than continuing in this fashion with his life (he tries to continue in the 'real world' for some time), he opts for cryogenic freezing and a 'virtual reality' life where he lives inside a false imagination created by LE foundation. So he kills himself and the LE foundation restart his life from a point he was happy. It all turns into a nightmare for him, hence the bad dreams, Times Square with no people, the blurred realities and the film climaxes with him on the the roof of a skyscraper with a technician from the LE foundation where he must decide between having his virtual life repaired and continuing with the illusion. Instead he opts to jump from the building, a metaphor for leaping into the abyss and not being a control freak. Imagine a Matrix for rich people where they can continue their lives.

no he's not dreaming all of it. he's dreaming from a certain point where he got the life extension thing to take over. he was disfigured in the car accident and took an overdose after sorting out the life extension / chryogenic thing. if you want to read some more indepth ideas about it, go to www.imdb.com and check out the message boards for this film. also, try watching the original spanish version 'abre los ojos'. it's much better.

that has to be one of the best films cruise ever did, but i had to watch it twice to understand it completely...from the point where he wakes up on the sidewalk on is his dream...he has had his body frozen until such time as a way is found to fix his deformity...but now the induced dream has become a nightmare and he is offered the choice of reenterring the dream or enterring life, poor, alone, but alive....by jumping off the roof he chooses real life again...if cruise made more good films like this and less dreck like war of the freakin' worlds he'd be a lot better off!

Vanilla Sky was a waste of time. Watch the original.."Open Your Eyes" (title is actually in Spanish, but I can't remember what it is). It features Penelope Cruz, and it is so much better.

no he didn't die in the car accident. he actually killed him self later by taking pills.
after he died the company that provides the service Life Extention or LE took him and started his life from that night were he passed out alone on the side walk.... in reality, he woke up alone and never saw penelope cruz again. But with LE, they started his extended life from that night were he passed out on the side walk but he was woken up by penelope and from there started a relationship with her
anyway..... in the end some complications happend, tech support came and gave him the choice to wake up and live in the real world or continue to live in a made up world.....he chose to wake up.
That's the gist.

I went to bed about 2 thirds of the way through! My husband sat and watched the end but still had no clue. Too cerebral for me that night. Might have another go sometime.
