A blood smear is a smear done on a glass slide of a drop of blood obtained by capillary puncture, arterial puncture or venipuncture. The drop of blood is spread evenly through at least 3/4th of the slide surface to show a smooth transition from thick to thin. An ideal smear must be tongue shaped, no ridges, no air spaces, and with a feathery edge. These blood smears after properly stained, are used in determining red blood cell (RBC) morphology, differential white blood cell counts (WBC) and direct platelet counts, to name some uses of the blood smear preparation.
