Firstly, congratulations on breastfeeding exclusively for 4 months! That's fantastic. Such a great start in life for your baby. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends exclusively breastfeeding for the first 6mths of a baby's life and combining breastmilk and solids until 2 and beyond.

You can start with anything you like. Most people start with very smooth runny bland food for example: rice cereal (mixed with breastmilk, formula or cooled boiled water) or pureed fruit. Try a small amount to start with, say one teaspoon on the first day, and build it up. When your baby is eating a decent amount (from 1/4 to 1/2 of a cup) you can introduce other foods.

It's recommended that you introduce foods one at a time and wait a week to see if there's any allergic reactions. It's best to avoid foods which will cause allergies until baby is 12mths eg egg, dairy, citrus. Check with your Child Health Nurse.

I have just started my 6mth old on pureed fruit and she loves it! Good luck.

You can start to wean your baby any time after 4 months, but keep on breast feeding as well. Raagi is a sort of millet flour. You could try a little cool mashed potato, without salt, or little yoghurt sweetened with fruit. Baked apple is good, as is ground rice (not rice grains!) The important thing is to give only a little until baby gets used to it, and not to use salt or sugar. The food must be really smooth and runny. If you want to use raagi, make it up with breast milk.

Baby should be exclusively breastfed until around 6 mos of age when they can start solid foods. Then solids are offered with continued breastfeeding until at least 12 months of age.
