My philosophy is this: every three years buy a new one.

Catch them on sale for around $40. This beats having one go bad somewhere very inconvenient, or spending $100 on one at a service station on the freeway.

Life expectancy for a car battery is between 4 - 6 years.

Was something left on in the car to run the battery down? Is the car driven daily or does it sit alot? If the battery was run flat by a load it can be recharged normally and still be good, take it and have it tested after a full charge to determine its state of charge and if it holds that charge before replacing it.

Three years. That's the warranty on replacement batteries purchased from Sears. I have not seen any warranties longer than that, lately.
A lot depends on usage as well.

5 years no problem, unless you have other issues with the car.
