I think Mike K is on some sort of hallucinogenic or something. GM, Ford and Chrysler are not all owned by the same people, or are in any sort of strategic alliance.
I also don't think the number of available models is what was hurting the domestic manufacturers. There is a perception gap - that american cars are lesser quality and aren't what the american public wants to drive, that japanese builders are more in tune with our market. I say it isn't true, and there is plenty of evidence to back me up.
But, since this isn't what your question is asking I'll not go into all that here.

I assume you mean 2012. And yes I anticipate the reduction of models and car lines from North American manufacturers in the coming years. It only makes sense financially. Their own car lines are competeing against themselves. This streamlining should also improve on quality and reliability issues. Presently there are about 330 different models offered in the North American market.
You will also see mergers of car companies.

Since GM, FORD, AND CHRYLSER, all have partnership, or are own by these company, the underlineing fact is who controls the auto industries. Think about it, GMC, or Chev./ FORD or MERCUARY, ETC. SAME AUTO DIFFERANT OPTIONS.
