The first thing you should do is change your password and notify your bank. If they got access to your account, they also have access with any other information paypal has, such as your bank account information and credit card info.

Legally speaking u will lose the case , since all the transfers through wire that is authenticated are genuine, u will not be able to stand the case unless u can prove that someone had stolen ur password or there is a problem in paypal authentication itself, both of them seems to be tough. You are not liable. It is Paypal's problem. I closed out my Paypal account years ago. I still get emails warning me of a problem with my account. I am sure they are fraudulent, so I don't open the emails. To my knowledge, Paypal has made no effort to put a stop to the fake emails.
If you have to go to court, you have grounds to defend yourself.

PayPal is really good about protecting their customers. I had a dispute with a seller on Ebay and they took care of me.
