A rear spoiler is used to disrupt unfavorable airflow over a car body, or on sports cars to create a negative airflow space behind the rear of the car.

A spoiler is used to keep the back end stable and stuck to the ground while travelling at high speeds. In your average street car, they don't serve much purpose other than style.

Only if you plan on making blasts down the freeway at 125mph plus then really its just for looks, car manufacturers will add them for styling and to help push the air around the car to get better gas mileage. But in real world everyday city driving it is nothing more than looks.

pure style in these cases
Also...
Spoiler can double as the 3rd brake light.... the sport packages usually include the spoiler as oppose to the luxury packages.
It's sometimes hard to clean and wax the area under a spoiler..

In a full on race car that WILL be used for that purpose, it helps with aerodynamics (keeping car glued to the road).
On passenger cars, it might have a bare minimum impact, but actually, it's only for style.

Ok first..yes they will do you good on air force...at 90+ MPH...second.. its only worth the money your willing to spend for a look... and please dont get one thats like 8 ft in the air...the only car that was able to pull that off was the original Dodge Daytona!
