Headlights on American cars feature three "nipples" sticking out of glass surface, European cars don`t, why?

In European countries is even e legal to have them, who knows, why are they here in the US in a first place?

The protrusions used to be used with some styles of headlight aiming fixtures.

Trackerrrr is correct, they used to align the aiming device that attached by a large suction cup.

Has to do with the manufacture of lamps, getting them out of the molds.
