I think they're leftovers from claws but they still help with grip when we walk barefoot.

They help you walk without falling. If you try to walk with your toes up in the air, it's hard to balance.

"The toes help with balance and basic foot function. As the heel comes off the ground the toes flex upward. This creates a chain of events that affects the movement of other joints in the foot. Quite often the toes must be amputated as a result of infection or gangrene. When this happens patients can still walk but they do not have as much agility. This also affects the pressure points in the foot and frequently can lead to other areas of the foot to develop pressure sores."

Of course they are useful! Is a bumper on a car useful? Yup, so are toes in the same way.
Are hands that can pick things up useful? Yup, so are toes in the same way.
Is the ability to walk upright without falling over useful? Yup, toes help with this too.
I'm sure there are more uses, but I am tired at the moment and thinking slowly.

Of course - they aid in our balance and maneuverability. Remember how your feet bend at the toes when you walk or run; imagine trying to run if you didn't have toe joints - you'd be much slower, and you'd have to use a lot of excess energy lifting your leg more. And walking would be much more difficult if we had, say, flippers like a duck, instead of separate toes. We'd end up waddling, like them.

i have seen on tv someone who has no arms and uses his toes for everything making tea also painting so if we all trained ourselves to use our toes we can use them like hands so i suppose that what the could be for :)
