Learning is an intrinsic process. Students who learn must create a sorrounding similar to that of the class room. Then memorizing will also be easy when they are under tension for writing the answers for the exam. If you switch on a tape witha music so involved, you cannot concentrate in your learning and the music also gets conditioned to your learning process. Then it will have some thing similar to the Pavlov's Classical conditioning. You can keep a smooth music to make the enviornment slightly alive. But if you think you are going to attent to the details of the music, then avoid it. What you lack is concentration. Learn to concentrate. Then studying will be easy. There will not be any need for music while studying.

The effect of music in learning varies from person to person.
One may consider music as a form of distraction while others may consider music as a helping hand for better and more efficient learning.
There are studies that have been made regading this topic and most of them show that classical music can help infants develop their brains. Also, classical music is said to make people eat more comfortably.
Some studies also suggest that mellow and classical music relaxes our brains and therefore stabilizes its movements and aids for better comprehension and learning...
Well, if your type of music is rock and hates classical and mellow music, then you might be a different case.

it depends upon the person and his mood.
well, at times, listening to music while studying helps me a lot. music serve as my mnemonic device while studying. the song playing reminds me of the the topic i'm reviewing.
however, when i'm not into the mood of listening, i go inside my room and study. It is the time that i want to study without any sounds, even whispers or music.
as for you, i believe that you sometimes feel the urge of listening to music. well, just go and listen even if you're studying. it works for me (just want to stress it) at times. maybe it can work for you.
