There are many different codec formats. Some are common and some are more exotic. AAC, WMA and MP3 are more common, but you also get ones like Ogg Vorbis etc that are more exotic and less widely used. Every manufacturer has is preferred codec and some give you a choice of two or more to use. The generic term MP3 comes from its wide use in cheaper "Low End" electronics.
'MP3' encoding and 'WMA Loss Less' are very similar in quality and both tend to clip sound from the top and bottom of the sound spectrum. Neither of them tend to suffer from artifacts or over compression of sound. At the end of the day, choose the format once you have chosen the player. Look at all of the functions and facilities on different players and then make a decision. For me the format has got to be MP3, but that is my decision based on my choice of player.
