After the whole year is up it should then belong to you. although if you want to use the full service when you move you will need to continue your subscription. As far as I know it works like a freeview box when you are not subscribing to Sky.

sell it cos it wont work in the states and anyway i dont think they will chase you over there. when i was younger i moved house quite a lot and even took the dish everywhere i went

Just call up sky and cancel it!!
tell them your reason and they will cancel therefore you won't pay when you're gone as it won't work in America!!
