My son is six months old and up until now has been sleeping through the night. For the past ten days he has been waking up during the night with a blocked nose and since the dummy is now not effective we have to calm him before he goes back to sleep. We have used Karvol drops on an old bib for the vapour to unblock his nose and just lately Karvol vapour rub on his chest but they are not overly successful.

Does anyone have any suggestions bearing in mind his very young age - these would be very welcome. Thank you.

Try buying a cool steam humidifier and putting liquid Vicks Vapor into the little spot for it on the vaporizer. Hot steam vaporizers can make the room too stuffy and could potentially cause injuries should he touch the steam. Also, try putting saline nose spray in his nose. This induces sneezing. Then, when he stops sneezing, take a standard blue-bulb aspirator and suck his nose out. No kid likes those things, but better he breathes and gets mad than stays clogged up. He could also be teething. Teething can cause those plugged up noses. If that's the case, nothing may work very well until the teeth rupture.

This requires intense adult supervision, and should not be used for infants and very young children, but it works:
Fill a pot about halfway with water, and add lots of salt to it. Put the pot on the stove, and turn the burner on. Put a towel over your kid's head, and the kid's head over the burner (you'll probably need a stepping stool or a chair.) Be very careful that the towel doesn't catch on fire. Have the kid inhale the vapors through the nose, but don't force the kid's face too close to the steam, as it can burn the face.
After a while, the nose will start dripping into the pot. You may need to repeat this another day if the nose reclogs. Don't be surprised if your kid complains of a headache after finishing this -- it's his sinuses being stripped of mucus and being exposed to air.
You might want to try this procedure first as an adult because of the risk of burns.

Go to your local chemist and but some saline drops, the directions for use will tell you how and when to use them.

I had the same problem with my Now 2 year old son when he was 3 weeks old due to a cold and they worked wonders for him, i sometimes use them still when he gets a cold and then use karvol or albas oil to help him breath.

There is also a medicine you can buy called Mediced wich does the same sort of thing as calpol only it had a decongestant in it that helps them to breath during the night by clearing the nose and throat.
I sometimes use this too.

Steam inhalation (with a touch of Vicks) helps a lot.
Keep a humidifier in the room.
If severe use a product like Nasonex to keep the nasal tract clear.

It's probably just a cold but it's difficult to make them comfortable when they are a little under the weather. I found it useful to have a steamer/vaporizer on in my baby's room when she had a cold. You can put eucalyptus mixes in the water. Talk to a pharmacist for more info.

Ayr drops, it is sodium chloride and water. It is a nose spray that will keep him breathing all day. Also, make sure you are using a humidifier and cleaning his nose periodically with a bulb syringe. I hope these help you!
