I'm a physicist, hence prejudiced I guess. Physics is about trying to understand how that wonderful world of ours really works, and bringing every day a little spark of added comprehension.
Now, in every day's life, I guess there would be an endless list of achievements to quote, starting with seasons definition, weather forecasts, radio, TV, cars, power plants, railroads, SUV, hummers, global warming studies, satellites, etc. Not all of that is beneficial for us all, but you have to know we physicists are out there, for the better or the worse.

This answer could take volumes to answer.
Just look around you and see all the things that rely on engineering and, by extension, physics: your computer, refrigerator, alarm clock.
None of these things could have been designed without physics. Physics, IMHO, is the basis for all science.
