I personally don't think there's any way that they have to be. The gothic pictures I enjoy often have a haunting or mysterious flair to them. The ones on the website provided, which I assume are yours, give a sensation of loneliness, which I personally feel is overdone. It it very difficult to define a category of picture, so don't worry about it. Just do what you want to do. Here are some site with pictures that can be defined as gothic, they are all very different, as you can see:

The Gothic stereotype that people put on the Gothic art is usually sadistic or depressing mood or sensation, but Gothic paintings and pictures were the opposite of what we describe as Gothic. Gothic art dates back to Germany and the Netherlands. This form of art is relative to the mixture of naturalism and Romanticism, except the concept relate mostly about God's creations, and humanitarian moods. Most Gothic picture of the Renaissance involved nature's lovely creations. This is the total opposite of modern Gothic style. To explain Gothic pictures, Gothic pictures of the Renaissance reflected the relationship we have with God in the natural world in which East Europe did not believe in a strict predestination belief in the Christian society. They thought of God as a natural healer, almost what Henry Thoreau's Walden proved during the Transcendentalist period 1850-1855. What changed the perception of Gothic was how Puritans and Christian of Western Europe thought that you cannot directly see God unless asked by a sermon himself, but in the late 1700s and early 1800s, Romanticism (use to be called Gothic) was introduced in the United States during the 1800s. However, the term Gothic changed to describe something sadistic or homicidal dangerous, or a taboo. Depending on the time period you work on your artwork or music, Gothic style was generally a positive feeling about being closer to God in the natural world, and feeling great about being human. Gothic paintings are usually conceptual rather than realistic because most artists such as Michelangelo and Raphael are examples of Gothic style, and some Italian artists. Their styles reflect mostly on angels and flowers, and nature. Sometimes some of the Gothic artist show people interacting in nature. Do not get deceived by the name, Gothic art is not what it seems to be when you say the name. For the other question, for me, music influences my art. For example, if it is something very jazzy or smooth then I would follow my human proclivity and visualize what you picture . Sounds and music are very swaying when it comes to art. It is rather a second banana to a presentation of an art show or exhibit.
