Does he look or touch your vagina when you get to the hospital and when you are giving birth

She examines you to see the progress. There is a lot of touching! Once pushing, the midwife, helps stretch the vagina to help with the delivery.

Yes, the midwife will look at and touch your vagina when you are giving birth. When you arrive at the hospital you will most likely be hooked up to an external fetal heart monitor (it looks like a belt around your belly that monitors the baby's heart beat) and you will be examined by the midwife, nurse or doctor to determine how many centimeters you are dilated (10cm is when you are ready to give birth). To check for dilation the examiner will put two (gloved and lubed) fingers inside of your vagina. They will check your dilation every few hours or whenever they feel it is necessary to judge how your labor is going.

If you are concerned that the midwife is a male and don't want a male touching you, let them or someone else know. They don't want you to feel uncomfortable.

If you are concerned about your thoughts/plans being carried out during your labor or have no idea of what to expect you might want to check out some birth plans:

Also you should take a class about giving birth. Most hospitals offer them for free, so you should just contact the hospital you plan on giving birth in. Good luck.

If you have a midwife instead of a doctor, then he/she would do everything a doctor would do, including delivering the baby. The only time a doctor would get involved is if you were having delivery complications or if you get a c-section.

He or she has to examine how dilated you are, they have to feel for the head, the may even have to cut you a bit down there, rather than you being torn so that babies head passes through o.k. Sometimes if your waters haven't broke by themselves they have to use a hook to break them and they access that through your vagina to. All very unpleasant. Not the seen for a fantasy anyway!!

My midwife WORKED at the hospital. She delivered babies when she worked the maternity floor. Yes, your midwife or OB will be down there, in your nether regions, it's their job. They can't deliver a baby without being down there, looking at what they're doing.
