Rumsfeld visited Saddam to make an arms deal 15 months after the murders that Saddam was just executed for, so apparently that was not Saddam's real crime.
However, Saddam gave 10,000 then 25,000 to the families of Palestinian bombers, and he fired rockets at Israel in the 1991 war.
Neoconservatives began agitating for the overthrow of Saddam as early as 1996. See the PNAC website and the list of members which included Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld. They were dissatisfied with the result of the 1991 Gulf War, and believed that if America used its military force to take over Iraq, it could be used as a base from which to spread democratic governments (which would incidentally be pro-Israel and pro American business) all over the middle east.

The real reasons why the US invaded Iraq:
UN resolutions passed beginning about 1990 were ignored by Saddam, most importantly concerning weapons development and disarming.
Iraq under Saddam sponsored and trained terrorists by the thousands.
Iraq under Saddam had a propensity for invading it's neighbors (Israel, Kuwait, Iran and Saudi Arabia).
Saddam Hussein was in the process of exterminating all Kurds in a plan he called "Anfal". We have so far recovered 180,000 bodies as a direct result of this single operation.
Saddam had a propensity for using biological and chemical weapons and was known to be developing at least a dozen more, including nuclear weapons, anthrax, and VX nerve gas. (Recovered documents show that most expiraments to find stable and usable biological agents failed.)
Saddam systematically undermined the objectives of the Oil for Food Program by using the money for his own needs. People inside Iraq reported that UN-manned border crossings were so corrupt that all you had to do is pay an extra "fee" and trucks could move in and out of the country uninspected.
Saddam was systematically undermining inspection teams sent by the UN to account for WMD's. His strategies included moving them onto military bases and declaring the bases off limits for national security reasons, he ordered some equipment and materials to be put into trucks and moved along roads 24 hours each day to avoid being parked in any location to be inspected, and under the guise of a natural disaster in Syria in 2002, most of the illegal equipment and weapons were airlifted into Syria.
(Here's my question: what kind of fool does it take to actually believe that a man like Saddam Hussein would voluntarily give up his weapons? Wouldn't that be kinda like believing that Osama Bin Laden would just walk up the steps in Langley, VA and give himself up without a fight? Raise your hand if you actually believe this will happen in our lifetime!)

Give the coalition some credit for doing some good. The man was a wacko tyrant who needed to be displaced. It is too bad that the coalition doesn't clean house on all maniacal terrorists.
Saddam was tried, convicted and executed by his own people. His victims were eager to mete out justice. No coaching or proding from the US was needed.

I had seen a lot of testimony on Iraqi TV by Abused Iraqi people and that is what the trial was about. I did not see one US rep called to give testimony about his Resistance to Washington. I did see several US reps supporting Him in his defense though.

The 17 resolutions he violated were from the United nations , not just the United States. Try telling the Kurds that what he did to them was not genocide. Ask Kuwait when he invaded it and killed its people that this was not a crime that is punishable by death. No, his real crime was that he was a butcher to all and had nothing to do with you anti American crap!

Okay. However, Iraq is in bad shape right now and there could be real problems coming out of the Middle East in the next few years as a result of that. We must not allow the United States to be judged by our leader. **** you Pay me

Most of the people killed by Saddam were done so at the bidding of the United States. He was kept in power so long because he was seen as an ally against Muslim fundamentilist.
The real crime.....the support given to him by the U.S.
