What should I do? Apparently there was a mixup, I stayed with my parents for the past 2 years and I thought they were claiming me on their income tax but I just found out that they assumed I was filing my own taxes. Should I just sent them in now??

its should be you filing your own income tax, anyway, you are already in this situation, so the remedy i would suggest is for you to go to your government tax agency then file your income tax for the year 2005 or 2004 but you will have to pay the penalties and other surcharges for the late payment....

If you are making money you need to file, you can no longer be claimed. With any luck if you made money and proper amount of taxes had been withheld and you were due a refund there is no penalty (as far as I know penalties happen if you owe the gov't - it the price you pay for not paying) so do your taxes and file them. You may need to go to a tax prep person for the prior years forms, since tax rules change yearly. I don't know if you could pull up the old forms on the computer but it's possible...

First of all set down with your parents and see if they claimed your dependency for 04 and/or 05? You have a box to check on your tax form as to whether or not your dependency has been released to somebody else.

Then get a 1040EZ booklet and tax form for both 04 and 05 and fill them out so you can get your refund for taxes withheld. I have worked for the IRS VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program for 36 years and am willing to answer any specific questions you have in filling out your returns so don't be afraid to ask. If you live in a city where there is an IRS office you can walk in and ask for assistance, too. You can go to IRS/GOV and get the forms you need there. If you are single, have no dependents, and recieved only W-2 income then you can file with a form 1040EZ. Remember that each tax year is inclusive so you will need form and instruction booklet with tax rates for each year; 04 and 05. Good luck.

Whether they were claiming you or not, you should have been filing if you made enough to have to file. There's a number each year where, if you make below that, you don't have to file.

If you were required to file, then you need to get your paperwork together an go ahead and file now. If you were not required to but had money withheld for federal taxes, you can still file and get your refund for those years.

Go to a place like H&R Block or Jackson Hewitt, they can file them for you.
