The 'T' in t'shirt stands for the shape of the shirt, the navy started the trend off for wearing t'shirts and then they were introduced into the army uniform too.

It's actually short for tee shirt. But why they call it "tee", I have no clue. Maybe because it is basic and light. I'm just guessing.
