to put it in simple terms DNS = Domain Name Servers is basically and address book for the Internet it keeps the list of all ip address, which is how the Internet works, every computer/website on the Internet has an ip addresss this is like a house addres when you type in an URL it would be like looking in the yellow pages for a business address to find out where to go, when you hit enter you computer sends the information such as www.yahoo.com to the DNS server your ISP uses and then it is resolved into the IP address of yahoo's servers making it possible for you to view their page. Bluntly without DNS the Internet would be much more difficult as you would have to remember the IP address of every site that you wanted to visit

DNS=Domain Name System is used to resolve ip address to name and vice-versa.For eg:a PC has an ip address 172.45.45.11 n hostname Flute if u want to search the PC with name on network DNS help to resolve the same. In short it keeps the account of table having which ip address is to which hostname

cos otherwise we would have to refer to all other machines by their IP address instead of a name - including the internet / web pages
