If we go back in history, and remember the Catholic church told a certain scientist to keep his findings quiet about the earth not being in the middle of our solar system? Given this undestanding; have the people studying and applying religion to our everyday life changed?

Man needs to be controlled in every aspect of his life. Even when he is walking on a road side or using the wash room or in any where in his normal life, man needs to be controlled. The best control is from his ownself. His own mind should control his behaviour. This can be done only in the Name of God & Religion. If you leave him on his own, he will end in things like AIDS HIV, Nuclear Bombs etc. He will perish on his own. Finally whether he is rich or poor, if he is white or black, whatever he is, he can live in Peace of Mind only by Total Submission of himself to the Will of Almighty God. This can be done by controlling himself. One man cant control another, This has to be done by Almighty God. That is achieved by the Holy Books & Messengers from God. These have showed us the ways to control ourselves & live in peace. Why do we have brakes in all the automobiles. To control the vehicle we need them.
Same applicable for man also.

The Church (The Roman Catholic Church) has historically been a great oppressor... giving with one hand, and taking with the other. I am not sure that much has changed with most religious institutions... perhaps the P.R. is just better. I do believe that more people today have broken away from institutionalized thinking. I know priests who freely express doubt, and use questions to both break down and rebuild their faith in different terms. My own faith is based on questioning and finding out what it is I can live with, and how I want to live.
Galileo was a free thinker - perhaps in some way BECAUSE of the Church. Maybe control and suppression go hand in hand with dissemination and free-thought.

Not at all. Certain famous man had coined an idea that even though a thousand angels get down to tell another bible, he will not change his belief. Religion is some kind of a control or totalitarian in approach so its better for one to choose which religion to belong to.
