i start with what ever number there are most of on the board, then work myself down to the least present one. just working it through number by tedious number.

If you determine that there are X boxes in a row/column/square which among them can only have X values, then no other boxes in that row/column/square can have it.
For example in the box:
ABC
DEF
GHI
and you've determined that:
A can be 1, 2, or 4
F can be 2, 4, or 5
G can be 4 or 5
I can be 1, 2, 4, or 5
then no other boxes in that square can be any of those numbers.

i also write the numbers 1-9 under the puzzle and as i use each number completely i cross if off. it helps me keep track of where i am in the puzzle and what spaces i need to keep an eye out for.
