This is like asking where do people walk to. Flying is a way of getting from one place to another for birds. It just depends on what they are doing. Most of the time they are seeking food, shelter or water. During migration some species are capable of incredible journeys to move to areas that are suitable for their needs. For instance Ruby-throated Hummingbirds will fly across the Gulf of Mexico with no rest.

Well during the winter birds fly South cuz its warmer there. Otherwise they just fly about their habitat searching for food.
