I cut on myself when I was in high school. That was over fifteen years ago.
The reason I did it? I wanted attention that I wasn't getting at home. When I turned sixteen and got a job, I didn't HAVE to be at home so much, and the cutting stopped.
If that's not what the problem is, and this is not just a phase that she's going through, talking to a school psychologist would be a great idea (schools have them, now... Some of us parents have raised a f*cked up generation of kids).
I guess the real question isn't IF she's depressed. We know that from the cutting. The REAL question is WHY she's depressed. Once you can address the reason behind her depression, you can start to help her heal herself from the inside (Jeez. Doesn't that sound corny). Seriously, though, if you want to help her, find out WHAT is troubling her. If she's been doing it for two years, there are two reasons that she could be depressed.
1) There's something circumstantial that's bothering her (i.e. parents got a divorce, separated parents got remarried, the birth of another sibling, or something that takes the focus off of her in her home).
2) Hormones. Some teenage girls have problems adjusting to puberty and end up depressed once they have begun to menstruate. If this is the case, the problem is medical, and can be treated with an anti-depressant and birth control pills.
First step is first, though. If you have already talked to her, it's time to refer her to a school psychologist.

Well, she's not going to stop unless she asks for help. I used to cut, I was a cutter for 5 or so years. I'm now 2 almost 3 years clean. If she's not willing to stop then you need to step in for her. Tell a teacher or her parents if you know them. This is very serious and she won't be fine until she get's professional help. You say she might hurt herself, well she already is! She might accidentally kill herself as scary as that seems, when I was hospitalized I heard horror storys of teen girls who almost bled to death because they accidentally cut to deep and if they hadn't told there parent that was home they wouldn't have went to the ER.
I really do hope you talk to someone who can get her help, she won't listen to you until she admits that she has a problem. I saw girls all the time in my hospital that were there for cutting as well that would never admit they had a problem and would still go about doing it. Cutting is like an addiction and takes forever to get over especially if she's not being treated for depression which sounds like she might have some form of.
Good luck to the both of you! It's not easy to tell on your friend like that, but it will feel good once you know she won't be hurting herself anymore.

My sister in law did the same thing. Her parents knew about it but did nothing until the rest of the family found out and demanded something be done. Can you talk to her parents? Does she have a boyfriends? How many other people know? You should gather as much family and friends as you can that know of what she is doing and invite her over for a *bbq* or party but in fact you all are there to talk to her about her problem. Does she go to college? If she goes to college, talk to her supervisor or the head of the school and they will take over. They will give her a choice to straighten up or leave

Call someone that works in that specific field and tell them what she is doing to herself. She may hate you now for it, but she will thank you in the end for doing this! An Institution is where she should go, aswell as trying to keep her close to her friends (visiting hours) and keep her away from the things/people that are making her this way. If it's her family, then maybe she should be in a foster home for a little while.
I hope that wasn't too harsh what I said.
Best Wishes for Both of you in 2007,
Shelley

Unless you have the capability of diagnosing her and writing a prescription, the only thing that you can do is try and be there for her and nicely suggest that she seek help.
Being a "cutter" does not necessarily mean that she is suicidal, but it means that she is finding a release in the pain in cutting herself. If she was in a different culture, this would be accepted. Some cultures believe that the opening of the skin and bleeding allow toxins to exit.
Just continue to be her friend, and if worse comes to worst, know that there was nothing else that you could have done legally to prevent her from doing it.

Tell her parents before it gets to the point where she cuts too far and no one is around to help her . People with this problem are crying out for help . She is not alright , she needs help . My Grand son is into Goth and he and his friends aren't into cutting . They respect themselves too much to destroy themselves . Get her parents or someone she really trusts involved . She needs help and a true friend would help ... She'll be mad at you for a while , but ,, at least she'll be alive . She'll forgive you when she gets her act together .

wow, people who cut..
the only person that can really make them stop is themselves.
my friend used to cut herself.
i took her counselling.
maybe that was a little tooo forward.
but idk, you really need to sit down and talk through her issues.
try and make he realise that isnt how to deal with problems because it doesnt do anything to help solve them.
try and get her into other hobbies.
like playing instruments or something?
let her know that its hurting you to see her hurting herself.
but yes, just be patient.
hopefully she'll stop soon.
