According to the Bible, the tallest man was Goliath at "six cubits and a span", which, depending on whose conversion you believe, puts him somewhere between nine and a half and 11ft tall. Sadly though, the Bible was not peer-reviewed, so Goliath must be disqualified.
The tallest man on record is Robert Wadlow, an Illinois man who died at 2.71m (8ft 11in) in 1940 at the age of 22. The record may not stand for much longer, however. Leonid Stadnyk, living in a remote village in Ukraine, is the world's tallest living man. At 2.56m he is just 15cm short of Wadlow's record. His growth rate has slowed down though - in the two years from 2002 to 2004 he grew 30cm, but only grew 2cm in the last year.

Robert Pershing Wadlow (February 22, 1918 – July 15, 1940), according to Guinness World Records is the tallest man in medical history for whom there is irrefutable evidence. He is often known as the Alton Giant. Wadlow reached an unprecedented 8 feet 11.1 inches (2.72 m) in height and weighed 439 pounds (199 kg) at his death. His great size and his continued growth in adulthood were due to a tumor within his pituitary gland. He showed no indication of an end to his growth even at the time of his death.

Xi Shun
Xi Shun (born in China, 1951) is a resident of Inner Mongolia and is since January 15, 2005 recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the world's tallest living man.
Xi Shun heading for Guiness World Record's office.Measured as 7 ft 8.95 in (236.1 cm) tall at the Chifeng City Hospital, Xi does not have a known growth disorder — unlike the tallest man ever, Robert Wadlow, and the tallest living man claimants, Leonid Stadnyk and Ajaz Ahmed. Stadnik and Ahmed claim a height of 8 ft 4 in (254 cm), but their claims are controversial and not currently accepted by Guinness.
Xi Shun claims to have been of normal height until he was sixteen when he experienced a growth spurt for unknown reasons, and reached his present height seven years later. He was in the army before returning to Inner Mongolia where he works as a herdsman.
