Somebody told me that 'aabaad' (a word in Urdu language) means 'town'/'city'. This tallies in case of the names of the places-Hydarabad, Nizamabad, etc. But what do we mean by the same word 'aabaad' in Zindabad and Murdabad?

the word "aabaad" has been derived from the word "aabaadi" which means population.therefore word aabaad means "to inhabbit". it is also frequently used in blessings by elders like"khush raho aabaad raho"which roughly translates into "remain happy and grow/multiply/flourish"
the word "zindabad" is made up of 2 words"zinda+aabaad".word "zinda" means alive/vibrant/full of life.therefore the word itself means "live long"
the word "murdabad" is also made up of 2 words "murda+aabaad".the word"murda" means dead.therefore word "murdabad" means "be finished/destroyed"

Abaad can be used in two ways.

If it is being used in connection to a place it means "inhabited". This is also quantitave. The word abaadi comes from abaad which means population.

If it is being used in terms of human being it means happiness and prosperity. This is qualitative. "Aapka ghar khushiyon se abaad rahey" means may your home be full of happiness.

Hope this answers your question.
