I talked to someone on it a year ago- and it was all staticy and whatnot- could only talk one way at a time- very annoying. Has it gotten any better since? Is it ever staticy or breaking up? Does it get worse when someone's using the internet, or vice versa (I have high speed broadband).

Voip is great as long as your broadband is both fast enough and consistent enough. I use Skype for stuff like chatting or a video call but for regular phone calls I use voip.com.

I've found that my broadband connection is the key to whether or not I'm happy with the way my calls sound. If I'm in an area where it's really congested and the network is slow or laggy then my calls get some static and there's echo problems or even sometimes parts of the conversation drop out. On the other hand, when I've got good broadband, the calls are actually better than when I'm on a landline or my cell phone.

I don't think just being online is going to cause you problems with call quality, but if someone is downloading a bunch of stuff or maybe playing online (like Xbox live), it can mess up your call.

If you are talking about services like Vonage, I can answer your question based on personal experience. I have cable internet, and Vonage is my only phone service... I have no local phone company. The connection is as good or better than local phone service. In 2 years, I've had ZERO interruptions or problems. I've been online downloading music and or videos and been on the phone at the same time and didn't notice any problems with either the phone or the download. I highly recommend Vonage.

If you're talking services like Sky Phone... then I have no idea.

Skype is excellent. It works with movie cameras as well. However you must have fast access like DSL or cable. About 6 million people talk over Skype at any time. Guess then.

It's only as good as your computer and its accessories; if your computer can't run (like during a blackout), you have no phone. I'll stick with a land-line, thanks.
