my aunt lost her husband and i would like to give her something !
is a dog a good idea ?

A puppy is a lovely idea, but they are a huuuge commitment and I think you would really need to discuss it with her first. If she has only just lost her husband she might have a hard time tending to a puppy's needs as well as dealing with her own grief.
I think right now the most important gift you can give your aunt is your support and your company. Let her know that she's not alone, maybe watch a DVD with her or invite her over for dinner. If you want to buy her a gift, I would suggest that you give her things that she can pamper herself with, or things to take her mind off the grief - i.e. books, music etc.

Yes, a doggie will bring back some cheer. However make sure your aunt loves animals before doing it. Otherwise she may hate you for that! In case she does not love animals, try some other gift like a walk man, or music system or anything that can entertain. try taking her out to restaurants and if possible to some picnic spots not visited by her with her husband before.

Take her some flowers and a nice card. Don't choose a dog for her. Maybe she doesn't want to be tied down with a dog.
When you take the flowers you can then ask if she wants a dog. If she does then allow her to pick a dog of her own choosing.
I would be pretty ticked off if someone took it upon them self to make that kind of decision for me.

A dog is a fine idea. Something small, like a pug, would provide a great distraction.

Maybe a bloodhound. A better idea: Give her a studfinder. It might help her find her lost husband.
