It's not necessarily the cards or the people who use them, it's more the way that some interpret the symbols. For instance, the "Death" card doesn't always mean physical death. It could mean death of situation, like "out with the old, in with the new". I would be more skeptic if taromancers read the cards incorrectly or did not apply the symbolism to the realism of a situation. Often individual cards are interpreted, rather than considering the surrounding cards too.
Nowadays, anyone can pick up a tarot deck and call themselves a tarot reader, which undoubtedly gives rise to the skepticism. But each person works differently and has their own methods for interpretation.
Some people react in anger or out of fear or ignorance if you mention that you use them. It's not necessarily a bad thing to use them, as they can be tools for a deeper "channel" for additional insight and information. (I don't use Tarot cards by the way, but I have studied "tarotmancy".)

I usually don't. Most people think it is neat that before Hurricane Katrina that I was a professional reader in New Orleans and worked out of one of the shops in the French Quarter

Not at all. I have been reading for thirty years, and am respected in my area for my expertise and knowledge. There have been a few...a very seldom few...who are definite skeptics, but they change their minds after a reading. I think that it all depends on how you are presenting yourself and your craft. I dress 'normally', and act 'normally', but during a read I do burn a candle and incense, spread out my silk cloth, then have at it. I do wear a 'mojo' bag, but it is kept inside my shirt, out of sight of anyone who doesn't really need to know it is there.
Good day and good luck to you!
Peace!

I don't tell many people I use them.
That said, a girl at work and I started talking about them one night, and she wanted a reading, which I did on our break...everyone was pretty cool about it, except one person completely freaked out--"You're doing the devil's work here??" which was *certainly* the first time I'd gotten that.

Not really. I don't really tell people that I do use them, and the ones that do know, also know that I do it for entertainment value. I guess you can say that I'm a 'believing skeptic'. In the end, I don't need the Tarot to help direct my future.

I'll say..someone once told me "I've noticed if you use tarot cards you die early and have a bad death. You have to burn these!"
