I don't believe we should have to choose only one or the other.
Short of psychological disturbances .....

It's quite easy to be both.

I know what you mean! I've noticed it too! So-called civilized people get on the Internet and become complete *******.

It is surely because the Internet is so huge and allows people to feel anonymous.

I think those who constantly belittle others in forums and chat have low self esteem and do it to feel a certain sort of "power" that they can't achieve in real life. They are making up for something.. whether it be bad grades, having no friends, etc. At the same time though, I often write my thoughts on topics and ideas with people I don't even know, when I probably wouldn't say much in real life in an open forum of total strangers in person. So it definately goes both ways.

I never let the people who write nasty things bother me. I am well aware of their shortcomings. Sometimes, if I am in a bad mood I might bite their heads off with words, but I usually just ignore it.

I know that I for one am a lot more open and opinionated online than I am in real life. I think honesty is a good thing but most things can be said in a way which doesn't make the posters look like idiots. I know it's hard sometimes, but if you can't make an honest comment in a positive way then you're obviously not as smart as you thought you where. Think of it as something of a challenge.

Are you making up a correlation between "mean people" and honesty?

I might be missing the link there, bu there is a big difference between "mean" and "honest" or "blunt"

There is a big difference between:
"yeh you're messed up"
and
"yeh, your messed up, here;s how you can fix it"

People on the internet are so quick to pass on criticism, but less likely to pass knowledge, or a means for improvement.

For the most part it has to do with "tact".
But, some people just like to pass on negativity, with criticism, because ultimately it gives them a little power over themselves, it makes them feel a little bit better to pass on some of their missery to others. Thats why alot of people would not prefer mean people.

I like where your question is going. Alot of what i thought were my "meanest" answers have gotten best answer, because they were not just empty criticisms.

I think most people come out of their shells online because there is no face to face.

I also think that some people are just too easily offended and if that's th case maybe they should log off instead of logging on!

BOO!!! Oops did I offend you??? Am I mean???? ROFL

People get hurt on the internet because some do not know better.
